Singapore Cricket Club

SCC Rugby Section LogoEstablished in 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club - SCC - today counts itself as one of the premier sports and social clubs in Asia. It is the second oldest sports club in Singapore and stands at the centre of the city's colonial heart and the glamourous skyline of the business district. The SCC entertains 13 sports sections, of which, six hold major internationally acclaimed tournaments annually on the world famous “Padang”: Rugby 7s; Cricket Twenty/20; Hockey 6s; Netball 7s; Premier Tennis and Soccer 6s.

Societe Generale Singapore are Sponsors of the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s Tournament, played at The Padang annually. We were the first major corporate sponsor of this historical tournament, which has been playing for 69 years. Our sponsorship also includes support for the SCC Rugby Section's senior and junior academies and their year-long activities.

As a Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup 2019, this sponsorship is a continuation of the Group's long standing tradition of supporting rugby. In Asia it follows on from the sponsorship of Hong Kong's Valley Rugby Football Club.  It is a step in raising our visibility in Singapore while reinforcing the Group's commitment to rugby internationally. The International Rugby 7s Tournament will be played once again in November this year when the tournament will be marking its 70th anniversary.

Societe Generale SCC International Rugby 7s

Singapore Cricket Club LogoThe Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s is organized by the Singapore Cricket Club and is one of the oldest invitational team sports events in Asia.

What began as a humble tournament for Singaporean and Malaysian teams in the 1940s has grown to be regarded as a spectator-friendly tournament is one of the premier international club tournaments in Asia, involving teams from around the world.

The Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s celebrates its 70th edition this year, and promises to feature high playing standards from teams all across the world. Continuing the development of rugby in Singapore, the Club also conducts coaching clinics along with youth sponsorships to expand and support youth rugby.

The trophy for the tournament, the Ablitt Cup, is named after Mr Bernard E Ablitt who was Convenor of the SCC Rugby Section from 1931-2 and President of the club from 1938-9. The silver Ablitt Cup was donated by Mrs Katherine Parentis in 1947 for the winners of the first seven-a-side tournament organised by the SCC Rugby Section. The tournament has since become an annual competition and one of the world's oldest Rugby sevens competitions. Many regard the SCC 7s as the most professionally run Sevens tournaments in the world, outside of the IRB Sevens Circuit.
